What is Fetal Anemia?

The fetal blood sampling procedure is almost the same as that used in amniocentesis. In this procedure, the needle is inserted through the mother's abdomen and into the umbilical vein of the fetus. Ultrasound is used to guide the procedure. The doctor will take a small amount of fetal blood to control the counting fetal blood. The test is a bit 'dangerous as it can lead to serious complications such as miscarriage, preterm birth, infections and even fetal distress. In severe cases, it can lead to the death of the child unborn.
How is fetal anemia treated?
