The most common cause of fetal anemia is when there is a difference in specific blood proteins or antigens of the fetus and the mother. It 'also known as alloimmunization. The condition can occur when the fetal child or unborn, inherits some antigens of the blood from the father that are not present in the mother. System of the mother does not recognize these and creates antibodies to attack the cells of the fetus. It can lead to a destruction of red blood cells in the fetus. In the most serious cases can lead to fetal anemia. fetal anemia causes heat failure leading to death. [2]

diagnosis of fetal anemia:

fetal anemia symptoms can be diagnosed in the following ways: [3]

1. Through Prenatal Ultrasound:

a prenatal ultrasound will help the doctor detect any signs of heart failure or fetal hydrops that happens due to fetal anemia. In the case of fetal hydrops, the liquid is accumulated and there can be a swelling in fetal tissues. In some cases, heart failure may occur when the pumps too fast to help the red blood cells provide oxygen to the heart heart.

In some cases, doctors suspected anemia when there is an increased blood flow in the fetal vessels in the brain. It's called middle cerebral artery (MCA). Doctors can measure the MCA blood flow when a prenatal ultrasound

3. Amniocentesis:

The amniocentesis procedure is performed by inserting a needle into the abdomen of the mother and in the amniotic sac. It provides physicians with a sample of the amniotic fluid that may help determine bilirubin levels (showing the breakdown of red blood cells). The amount of sample collected is very small and usually does not require hospitalization

4. Sampling of fetal blood:

The fetal blood sampling procedure is almost the same as that used in amniocentesis. In this procedure, the needle is inserted through the mother's abdomen and into the umbilical vein of the fetus. Ultrasound is used to guide the procedure. The doctor will take a small amount of fetal blood to control the counting fetal blood. The test is a bit 'dangerous as it can lead to serious complications such as miscarriage, preterm birth, infections and even fetal distress. In severe cases, it can lead to the death of the child unborn.

How is fetal anemia treated?

The doctor may use one of the following methods to treat fetal anemia. [4]

  • the doctor can monitor the fetus frequently and measure blood flow in the MCA
  • In the case of moderate to severe fetal anemia, doctors they can refer to a withdrawal of fetal blood transfusion. In this procedure, red blood cells transfused will be compatible in the umbilical vein using ultrasound visualization. It is very similar to the process of removal of fetal blood. The procedure may have to be repeated once in one to four weeks, depending on the condition of the fetus.
